I was a bit of a sweaty mess when Jaxson ushered me into the now-empty dining hall. I’d waited for the EMTs to get to camp so I could share the images Darrin had taken of the rattler that had bitten Phil. I had tried to convince Cody to take me on the ATV to meet up with the guys when they hiked out with Phil, but Cody told me he wanted to make sure he had plenty of room on his vehicle. I was also quickly informed that it was a UTV and not an ATV. Apparently, ATVs are only for recreation, and UTVs are for work.

“The model WES picked up last year was an old fire and rescue vehicle. We bought it at a surplus auction online,” Cody had explained while we waited for the EMTs.

I smiled and nodded my head. Other than the ample cargo space on the back, it looked like the ATVs we rode around the farm. Guess I’ll do some googling next week when I have time. We need one of these bad boys on the farm.

For now, I looked down at the veggie burger option for lunch. I don’t mind veggie burgers, but can we not call them burgers? If there wasn’t a cow involved in the patty’s making, it’s not a burger. It’s a sandwich. This specific sandwich was a black bean patty. I was hungry, so I grabbed two buns and made up two black-bean-patty sandwiches, complete with all the trimmings. They also had fries, and they’re kind of hard to fuck up. These had the perfect balance between crisp on the outside and mushy potato goodness on the inside.

I sat down at a table and Jaxson joined me. “How are you holding up?” Jaxson asked me.

“I’m fine,” I said as I bit into my sandwich. “You?”

“I’m nervous,” Jaxson said. He wrung his hands. I didn’t think I’d ever seen someone actually wring their hands outside of a movie villain before. “I know Mano is smart and even-tempered, but I don’t know how he will handle this crisis. He can be melodramatic.”

“He seemed in better shape than Phil did.” I threw a ketchup-covered fry into my mouth.

“Did you see the bite?”

I chewed for a second before answering. “Darrin hadn’t looked at the bite yet when I started to run back to camp. I’m sure he has things under control.”

“Thank God Darrin was with Mano out there. I can’t imagine Mano doing this on his own without an ER doctor there to guide him. Sure, we’ve both read the manuals on wilderness safety, but we’ve never had a problem like this. Usually, we go the whole weekend with only a couple of minor scrapes but nothing bad. Here we are on day two, and we’re already sending our second camper to the hospital.”

Jaxson stood and started pacing. I finished my first sandwich and started on my second one. The door to the dining hall opened and the rest of my hiking group walked in.
